When severe storms are forecasted for Long Beach Island, local cable station channel 22 and local radio stations 92.7FM & 1670 AM will broadcast emergency information. Other sources of information can be accessed via Nixle text messages by registering on the Long Beach Township Police website, www.lbtpd.org . The flood warning system is intended to provide up to 24 hours advance warning of a flood hazard. When directed by Emergency Management, information on local conditions can be obtained on Long Beach Township websites. In case of emergency, Township residents can call the police at 609-494-3322 – 24 hours a day. The pick-up points and staging areas for persons without means of transportation are:
- Long Beach Township Municipal Building (primary)
- St. Francis Center (alternate)
- Firehouses in Beach Haven, Ship Bottom, Surf City, Harvey Cedars, Barnegat Light
If someone in your home would need to be evacuated by ambulance, please notify the Health Department in advance at 609-492-1212. In an emergency, contact the police if you are currently not on file.
FLOOD WARNING, WHAT TO DO
If no evacuation has been ordered
- Get storm updates from The Weather Channel on local channel 39, the local community channel 22, or local FM radio stations 100.1 and 92.7, or you may
- Register through Nixle for storm updates
- Make sure you have a battery powered radio
- Collect your Family Disaster Supply Kit, blankets and sleeping bags and keepthem with you
- Call your family’s emergency contact person to report your plans
- Keep children and pets indoors
- Make sure you have cash and a full tank of gas in your car
- Obey advisories promptly
- Bring in any outdoor items that might cause damage
- Do not walk in or try to cross or drive through flood waters
If evacuation is advised
- Pack your family’s Disaster Supply Kit, extra blankets and sleeping bags
- Lock your windows and doors before leaving home
- Tune your car radio to a news station for updates on evacuation routes
